Old Professor wrote:I recently was reminiscing about spending a considerable portion of one of my honeymoons at Eddie Condon's club in New York's Greenwich Village in 1946. I did a search for "Eddie Condon" and found an excellent biography at Wikipedia. One section had the following:
From 1945 through 1967 he ran his own New York jazz club, Eddie Condon's. In the 1950s Condon recorded a sequence of classic albums for Columbia Records. The musicians involved in these albums - and at Condon's club - included Wild Bill Davison (cornet), Billy Butterfield (trumpet), Edmond Hall, Peanuts Hucko, Pee Wee Russell (clarinet), Cutty Cutshall, Lou McGarity (trombone), Bud Freeman (tenor sax), Gene Schroeder, Dick Carey, Ralph Sutton (piano), Bob Casey, Walter Page, Jack Lesberg, Al Hall (bass), George Wettling, Buzzy Drootin, Cliff Leeman (drums).
My memory may be playing tricks on me but I seem to recall that Muggsy Spanier was the horn player and in my mind I also have Pee Wee Russell there in addition to Eddie Condon of course. In fact, I was sitting close enough to the horn player, whoever he was, that I overheard an argument with his lady friend where she said she thought he loved that **** horn more than he loved her. As I recall he didn't deny it.
Does anyone know if Muggsy Spanier would've been playing trumpet or cornet at Eddie Condon’s place at that time?
