Sir George Shearing would have had a birthday this Saturday. He was born August 13th, 1919. He passed on in February of this year. Shearing's main claim to fame was the invention of a unique quintet sound, using a combination of piano, vibraphone, electric guitar, bass, and drums. Shearing played in a style he called "locked hands," which he refined from Milt Buckner's early '40s work with the Lionel Hampton band, as well as Glenn Miller's sax section and the King Cole Trio. He composed over 300 songs at least one now a jazz classic called Lullaby Of Birdland. Beginning this “Shearing” set was his first big hit from 1949.
