George Shearing, the blind British pianist who wrote and first recorded the jazz standard Lullaby Of Birdland, died on Monday in Manhattan at 91. In the late 1930s George Shearing sounded like Teddy Wilson or Fats Waller. He was encouraged by Glenn Miller, Fats Waller, and others to immigrate to the US after WWII but success didn’t come easy. As the story goes when he performed for one American agent he received the response: “What else can you do?” He realized he needed a sound of his own and the quintet was born and thus the Shearing sound. In 1949, just two years after he immigrated to the United States, his recording of “September in the Rain” became an international hit.
