Trumpeter Roy Eldridge was born January 30th in 1911. Little Jazz as he was known worked for Artie Shaw and Gene Krupa during the swing era, led groups of his own and was on countless great sessions as a sideman.

Saxophonist Benny Golson turns 81 on January 30th. The native of Philly is as equally well known for his composing and arranging as for his playing. He worked for Bull Moose Jackson in the early 50s and later Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey. In fact Benny Golson was the music director for Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers Golson composed both Killer Joe and Whisper Not the latter heard here vocally by Peggy Lee

Composer, guitar strummer and piano player Antonio Carlos Jobim would have had a birthday this week. The Brazilian who was influenced greatly by the West Coast jazz scene in the 50s in turn influenced a movement in jazz and modern music as a whole with the Bossa Nova craze in the 60s. Jobim composed both of these cuts
