Still performing, saxophone giant Sonny Rollins turns 80 tomorrow. Rollins worked with Bird, Miles, Monk and others all before the age of 20. In 1956 he recorded the first of what many critics began calling landmark recordings. I remember the first time I heard this was on a Franklin Mint history of Jazz red vinyl LP. I didn’t have many flowery words for words it. Just kind of sat threw it snappin my fingers … called it a groove. Blue Seven.

Ella Mae Morse was born on Sept 12th, 1924 It is said that she and Freddy Slack helped build the Capitol Records tower down in Hollywood with the label’s first million seller Cow Cow Boogie. This was another hit for the duo and Capitol Records recorded in 1946
