Pianist and bandleader Claude Hopkins was born on this date in 1903. Hopkins was a talented stride pianist but not very well known. As early as the 20s he toured Europe as the musical director for Josephine Baker. In the 30s and 40s led his own big bands and then mostly recorded with small groups. This recording was made in 1961 with Buddy Tate on tenor, Joe Thomas on trumpet and others.

27th: Lester Young – 1909 Basie 36-1940 on which he can be heard on well over 100 recordings. Pres as Billie Holiday called Lester Young was one of the top 3 great early tenor saxophone players of the Swing Era. His tone was different in that he used the tenor almost as an alto sax light jumpy lilting airy. Of course playing some of those early Basie recordings or his later work with Oscar Peterson would be way too easy. Here are four not so well known recordings by Lester Young from the 30s 40s and 50s. First with his pal and roommate at the time Billie Holiday who he called Lady Day

If you’re fortunate to be in a rural area or especially the mountains any time soon you’ll note the annual mating song of the crickets coming to a set of ears near you. It’s really incredible right now in the Sierra. A pulsating rhythmic chirp amplified by a silent still background. Or as the mountain folk would say…thousands a them horny little buggers….
