Zutty Singleton was one of the two major drummers to emerge from the formative period of jazz in New Orleans in the late 20s. But he also later played behind Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, during the bebop era. Zutty was once hired by Artie Shaw in the 30s not to play in his band… but to coach them on how to swing. Of course that was before Buddy Rich came on board with Shaw. Zutty Singleton on drums all cuts this set

Jazz vocalist Dakota Staton passed away last month at 74
It was while singing in a Harlem nightclub called the Baby Grand that Capitol Records producer Dave Cavanaugh discovered Staton and signed her to Capitol. After several singles she attracted the attention of Down Beat magazine, winning the magazine's high profile "Most Promising New Comer Award" in 1955.
