And speaking of Kansas City. Pianist and bandleader Jay McShann died last Thursday. Mr. McShann also known as Hootie is probably best remembered in most circles for hiring Charlie Parker in 1940. But the McShann big band was right up there with Basie and Andy Kirk as one of the most successful hard driving and hard swinging bands in Kansas City.
