February 22 Rex Stewart, was born this week in 1907. Stewart is probably best known for his work as trumpet man in Duke Ellington’s Orchestra for 11 years beginning in 1934. In 1945 he started exclusively leading his own groups. February 19 Stan Kenton, b.1912 Kenton was an unknown when he auditioned his orchestra at the Rendezvous Ballroom on Balboa Island, right off of Newport beach here in California in the Spring of 1941. Somehow he convinced the club to give his band a summer booking and Kenton made a big splash. However it wasn’t until the mid 40s that Kenton really had his band together which is when the first 3 recordings in this set were waxed
