Big Band/Swing Top 10 songs

Postby kaili charmer » Sun October 24 2004 11:31 AM

Which do you think were the top 10 songs back in the era of Big Band/Swing Music? I've thought about it myself, and I just can't narrow it down...

It really depends on the criteria. Sheet music sales? Record sales? Instrumentals? Just plain great songs? Fidelity? Danceability?

Depends on how modern, modern is to you. Also depends on whether it's big band, vocals or small groups.

Today's jazz; Wynton Marsalis small groups, Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra for big band of today.

50s/60s small groups for starters I'd suggest Benny Carter either BBB & Co. or Further Definitions.

For big band Basie or Ellington in the late 50s early 60s; Basie - Chairman Of The Board. Ellington - hard to beat The Paris Concert or 70th Birthday Celebration. Piano In The Background is another great Ellington early 60s release.

Good luck

Several obscurities here. You have me scrambling for samples. Thanks!

Love the Boyd Raeburn. I must admit to not giving Chico Marx a fair chance till now.

Chico Marx "Paljacci" sounds like it would be taken from a Marxbrothers movie. It was a very short lived band he had during the late 40s, that contained Mel Tormé as the most well knowned name.

You may well be correct. Neither the W. Bruyninchkx Swing Discography, the Jepsen Jazz Records Discography 1942 - 1962 or the Lord Jazz Discography list any recordings by the band.

Makes me want to hear it even more!
